Money tips for India
- Expect a margin: banks, airport counters and card networks add a markup to the mid-market rate shown above. Airport exchange counters usually give the worst rates.
- ATMs: withdrawing rupees from a bank ATM is usually better value than exchanging cash. Check your own bank’s foreign transaction fees, and choose to be charged in INR when the machine asks.
- Carry small notes: autos, street food and small shops often can’t change large notes.
- Cards: widely accepted in hotels, malls and city restaurants. Tell your bank you’re travelling so payments aren’t blocked.
