Quick, practical answers to the questions travellers ask most before a trip to India. Rules and prices change, so check official sources for anything important.
Planning
When is the best time to visit India? For most of the country, October to March. The Himalaya (Ladakh, Spiti) is best from June to September, and hill stations are pleasant from March to June. Check any place with our best time to visit checker.
How many days do I need? Ten to fourteen days covers two or three regions comfortably, for example the Golden Triangle plus Varanasi or Rajasthan. Trying to see the north and south in one week means spending most of it in transit.
How much does a trip to India cost? It depends on travel style, season and place. Our budget calculator gives a range in rupees and dollars broken down by stay, food, transport and activities.
Visas and entry
Do I need a visa for India? Most foreign nationals do. Many can apply online for an e-Visa through the official Government of India website. Requirements depend on your nationality, so check the official site, and avoid unofficial agency sites that add fees.
Do some areas need special permits? Yes. Foreign visitors need Protected Area or Restricted Area permits for some border regions, including parts of Ladakh, Sikkim and the North-east. These are usually arranged through registered local agents or permit offices.
Money
Should I carry cash? Yes, some. Cards work in hotels, malls and many restaurants in cities, but small shops, autos and street food often prefer cash or UPI mobile payments.
Can foreigners use UPI? Some services let foreign visitors use UPI through a prepaid wallet linked to their passport. Availability changes, so check the latest options before you travel.
Is tipping expected? It’s appreciated rather than required. Many travellers leave around 5–10% at sit-down restaurants (check whether a service charge is already on the bill) and tip drivers and guides at the end of a tour.
Getting around
Is train travel in India safe and comfortable? Generally yes, and it’s one of the best ways to see the country. AC classes are more comfortable and have bedding on overnight trains. Book early, because popular trains sell out.
Should I hire a car with a driver? For Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle it’s a popular, comfortable option. Agree the price, the route, and what’s included (tolls, parking, the driver’s food and stay) in writing before you start.
Is it easy to get taxis? In big cities app cabs are easy and avoid haggling. At airports and stations, use the official prepaid taxi counter or an app.
Health and safety
Is India safe for tourists? Millions of tourists visit safely every year. Use common sense: watch your belongings in crowds, use registered transport at night, and be cautious with overly friendly strangers who offer help, deals or “special” shops.
Is India safe for solo women travellers? Many women travel solo in India and enjoy it. Dress modestly outside beach areas, book well-reviewed accommodation, avoid isolated places after dark, and use app cabs with trip sharing turned on.
Can I drink the tap water? No. Drink filtered or sealed bottled water. A filter bottle saves money and plastic.
What vaccinations do I need? It depends on your route and health. See a travel clinic or your doctor several weeks before your trip.
Culture
What should I wear? Light, breathable clothes that cover shoulders and knees work almost everywhere and are required at religious sites. Carry a scarf. Beach areas in Goa are more relaxed.
Any etiquette tips? Remove shoes at temples and homes, use your right hand to eat and pass things, ask before photographing people, and keep public displays of affection low-key.
