Not sure which Indian train class to book? Answer three quick questions and get the best-fit class and a runner-up, with a plain explanation of what each class is like.
Class descriptions follow Indian Railways’ standard class types. Availability varies by train: not every train has every class. This is a general guide to help you choose, not a booking tool.
How the India train class chooser works
Indian trains offer up to seven classes, and the names are confusing for first-time visitors. This chooser asks three things: whether your journey is daytime or overnight, your budget, and who is travelling. It scores each class using simple rules based on comfort, privacy, price and safety, then shows the best fit and a runner-up.
The scoring is transparent and deliberately simple. Overnight trips favor berth classes such as 2A, 3A and 1A, because you can lie down. Daytime trips favor chair cars. A low budget raises Sleeper and Second Sitting, a comfort-first budget raises 1A and Executive Chair, and solo women, couples and families get adjustments for privacy and space.
Indian train classes at a glance
| Class | What it is | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1A (First AC) | Lockable 2- or 4-berth cabins with bedding | Privacy on long overnight journeys |
| 2A (Second AC) | Open bays with 4 berths plus 2 side berths, curtains and bedding | The best balance of comfort and price overnight |
| 3A (Third AC) | Open bays with 6 berths and bedding | Budget-friendly air-conditioned overnight travel |
| EC (Executive Chair Car) | Wide reclining seats on fast daytime trains | Quick, comfortable daytime hops |
| CC (AC Chair Car) | Air-conditioned seats on daytime trains | Day trips such as Delhi to Agra or Jaipur |
| SL (Sleeper) | Non-AC berths with open windows | Lowest-cost berths, for adventurous travelers |
| 2S (Second Sitting) | Non-AC bench seats | Short hops, usually crowded |
IRCTC’s published Foreign Tourist Quota guide lists Executive Class, 1A, 2A, 3A, Chair Car, Sleeper and Second Sitting as bookable under the quota.
Which class is best for each type of traveler?
- First-time visitors on an overnight train: 2A is usually the best value, with curtains, bedding and an air-conditioned coach.
- Solo women: many choose 1A cabins or 2A. Keep valuables on you, check the passenger chart, and book lower berths when possible.
- Families: 2A or 3A in the same bay keeps you together. Avoid Second Sitting with small children.
- Budget travelers: 3A or Sleeper cut costs, but Sleeper can be hot, crowded and noisy, and it is less secure for luggage.
- Day trips: CC or EC on trains such as the Gatimaan Express, Shatabdi or Vande Bharat give comfortable seats and often meals.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best train class in India for tourists?
For overnight journeys, 2A (Second AC) offers the best balance of comfort and price. For daytime trips, an AC Chair Car or Executive Chair is the most comfortable choice.
What is the difference between 1A, 2A and 3A?
1A has lockable private cabins with 2 or 4 berths, 2A has open bays with 4 berths plus 2 side berths and curtains, and 3A has open bays with 6 berths. All three are air-conditioned and include bedding.
Is Sleeper class safe for foreigners?
Many travelers use it, but it is non-air-conditioned, crowded and harder to keep your belongings secure. Most first-time visitors prefer an AC class.
Which train class is best for solo women?
Many solo women choose 1A cabins or 2A for overnight trips, keep valuables on them and check the passenger chart on the coach.
Can foreigners book all train classes?
IRCTC’s Foreign Tourist Quota guide lists Executive Class, 1A, 2A, 3A, Chair Car, Sleeper and Second Sitting as available, though each train only offers the classes it has.
